Seventy years of Chinese anthropology

Abstract This paper examines the 70-year history of Chinese anthropology from domestic and international perspectives since founding People’s Republic China in 1949. The policy reform opening-up 1978 was a turning point anthropology. Within 30 years before opening-up, more or less at 10-year standstill that then followed by boom influenced former Soviet Union. continued development 40 after can be divided into five stages based on “major events” “internationalization.” first stage (1978–1995) described as discipline reconstruction period; second (1995–1999) witnessed fast internationalization anthropology; third (2000–2008), became an important home with improving integration. fourth (2009–2012) exhibited initial formation system frequent exchanges; fifth saw deepening research increasing overseas studies (from 2013 to present). In past 70 years, especially has developed greatly many aspects, including institution building, degree awarding, talent training, communities establishing, conferences held abroad, engagement hotly-debated issues, existed both advantages disadvantages. All these demonstrate characteristics are different practiced West.
